Designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the 312 Willow 1 armchair for Cassina is at the center of the designer's spatial research for the company's "Cassina I Maestri" collection's project plan.
In this study, Charles Rennie Mackintosh brilliantly unhinges the enduring formal and compositional stereotype with the 312 Willow 1 seat, which is the definitive testament to his work. The seat is a true work of high cabinetmaking, recovering the principles of neo-Gothic taste and Scottish tradition through a combination of the highly innovative technical processes promoted by Cassina and the precious craftsmanship, as evidenced by the manual assembly of the elements that make up the seat.
The seat, which is more like a throne than a chair, not only occupies the space but also divides it using clean, geometric lines and patterns, while also drawing attention to itself with an impressive, semi-circular backrest made of solid wood. The seat and back are both primarily constructed out of ash-veneered beech plywood. The cushion is built right into the seat itself, and it can be purchased in either chic beige or refreshing green fabric.
