The 722 Woodline armchair, part of the Cassina collection and designed by Marco Zanuso in 1964, is a culmination of the designer's exploration of the connection between the chair's bearing structures and its upholstered seat and backrest.
The chair's formal system of self originates in the sturdiness of its wooden supporting structure, which is conceived from a circular base that is consistently reflected in the design of the armrests and legs. Semi-circular matrices in curved beech plywood and ash or walnut veneer are used for both components, which are practically mirror images of one another. The removable cushion cover can be upholstered in one's choice of leather or fabric. Snap buttons secure the removable fabric cushions with a simple, straight design to the panel.
In the version that Cassina demonstrated, it has an iconic and one-of-a-kind style, where the armchair has a structure made of walnut, an element made of leather that is a panel, and leather cushions that are in a beautiful tobacco colour.
