Description

The Utrecht armchair that was produced by Cassina and designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1935 for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam displays the authentic hallmark of the designer's extremely personal structural code, which is a balance between a quest for experimentation and effective ergonomics.

This armchair, with its spacious seat and substantial cushioning of polyurethane foam and polyester wadding, is the genuine marriage of elegance and comfort. As a result of their joining at the floor, the armchair's back and seat form a single, sturdy structure. The armrests' orthogonal forms, secured to the backrest, provide the seat with an extra layer of support.

The Utrecht armchair comes in multiple sizes, as well as a curved sofa that seats two or three people. In all of its iterations, the seat's framework is fabricated from steel, and its upholstery features a unique needlework technique that consists of regular, distant, and lengthy stitches of the zigzag and crotch stitch types.
