Iconic Proust armchairs designed by Alessandro Mendini for the brand Cappellini are now being used to furnish the majestic spaces at Palazzo del Quirinale during the exhibition entitled “Quirinale Contemporaneo”.
One of the most well known pieces of design in the world, the Proust armchair was launched in 1978 as a part of the furnishing layout for Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, during an exhibition entitled “Incontri ravvicinati di architettura” (Close Encounters with Architecture), and shortly thereafter, its strongly post-modern look earned it extensive success among sector professionals and the international public.
A newly revisited edition of the chair has been released recently. It maintains the traditional structure in hand-carved and painted wood, which is undoubtedly its most distinctive feature. Proust is upholstered in bright multi-coloured fabric that mimics the decorations on the wood structure.
