Thonet Furnishes the VISTA Science Experience Center in Austria

Located within the campus of the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg, the VISTA Science Experience Center places science communication at the heart of a contemporary and welcoming architectural setting. Designed by Dutch Studio MAKS and opened in October 2025, the centre spans approximately 1,500 square metres dedicated to exhibitions, workshops and interactive experiences.

Completing the project is the VISTA Coffee Lab, set amidst greenery and characterised by a large glazed façade that makes the most of natural light and strengthens its connection with the campus. The interiors are furnished with Thonet solutions, selected for their balance of functionality, comfort and understated aesthetics.

The centrepiece is the S 243 chair, designed by Frank Rettenbacher in 2025. Its tubular steel frame incorporates bentwood elements for the seat and backrest, following an approach that minimises the use of materials. Stackable and available in numerous variants, the chair was selected for the Coffee Lab in an olive green finish, paired with natural oak treated with a clear lacquer.

Alongside the seating is the S 1123 table, designed by Studio Irvine in 2009. Customised in the same olive green shade, the model demonstrates Thonet’s manufacturing flexibility, allowing colours, materials and configurations to be combined. Perfectly suited to one another, the two elements help define a functional, durable environment that integrates harmoniously with its natural surroundings.
