Smoke Armchair Moooi

The processing method used to create Maarten Baas's Smoke armchair for the Moooi brand is what makes the completed product so interesting; the chair is actually crafted from wood that has been treated with fire and reinforced with epoxy glue. The uniqueness of such a charred and still solid thing is reminiscent of the fable of the phoenix, the mythical bird that is said to be reborn from its own ashes.

The upholstery of the Smoke armchair is made of fire-resistant foam, and it is coated in leather. The wooden surfaces of each object are distinctive. By removing sections of the frame, Smoke reinterprets the form of a classic armchair befitting the finest antiques. The combination of such craftsmanship and pyrotechnic treatments results in a strikingly aged appearance.
