Knoll is one of the world’s leading design brands, in both the private sector and the contract industry. Their collections feature modern style with simple lines, deliberate details, lively colours and original fabrics. These “ingredients” have produced authentic design icons.
The company was founded in New York in 1938 by Hans Knoll, but his premature death motivated his wife Florence to continue his work. Chairs, tables, sofas and desks are the result of collaborations with designers from all over the world, for the purpose of creating comfortable, captivating interiors.
Knoll is always looking for new materials and cutting-edge technology for its evolving collections, which are in line with contemporary living needs.
The company has always been inspired by the Bauhaus philosophy, which maintains that objects must be beautiful, functional and affordable for everyone. Therefore, high quality artistic objects are mass produced to fulfil contemporary necessities. For this reason, each Knoll product is essential, characterized by pure, rational geometric shapes. Glass, steel and similar materials are preferred because their fundamental characteristics facilitate industrial production.
Knoll specializes in office furniture and offers several different solutions for optimising spaces to fit work needs. A wide range of products, finishes and customisation options allow each architect to design a workspace that is completely tailored to the human dimension, since they can be sure to choose high performance products suited to modern work habits. Knoll has always designed office furniture with an open space layout in mind, which explains why it offers acoustic panels that protect privacy and improve the performance and comfort of workers. Particular attention is dedicated to office chairs, which are carefully designed to adapt to movements and guarantee correct posture throughout the day. A few of these products are the Generation and Regeneration chairs and the Life armchair.
Furnishings for home interiors are modern, and Knoll has always been recognized worldwide for its capacity to inspire with furniture that evolves but never goes out of style. Some of their greatest designers are Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll and Mies van der Rohe.
Eero Saarinen created the Tulip collection, a series of tables in assorted sizes that was launched in the 1950s. It is still one of the brand’s best selling collections. The designer removed the four legs from this table and replaced them with a tulip stem base. The top comes in different sizes and shapes, made from MDF, marble or glass. The collection includes the Tulip Chair, which also has the characteristic base and goes perfectly with the table.
Another famous chair is the Bertoia Side Chair, a design icon from the mid twentieth century that can match any furnishing scheme perfectly because of its sculptural structure in chromed steel.
The Barcelona collection by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe demonstrates accurately that “less is more”. It consists of a series of simple, elegant chairs that blend modern design and excellent craftsmanship. The cushions are made from hand-quilted panels with cowhide buttons. Its structure is in mirror finish steel.
Knoll sofas are the perfect refuge, a place to relax with the family or alone. All these pieces provide perfect modern design for any living room. Some of the more famous are: the geometric Florence Knoll Sofa, the soft comfortable Avio Sofa and lastly, the Womb sofa, which belongs to the collection of chairs created by Eero Saarinen with the same name. It features a high rounded backrest that welcomes and supports the body: a unique piece that can make a small corner of your home very special.
Knoll’s design stands out for its continuous and dynamic evolution. The brand supports sustainability by making sure that each phase of the production cycle is certified and complies with environmental protection standards, and that each product is recyclable to some extent.
